Senate extends and expands homebuyer tax credit
The Senate voted unanimously today to extend the homebuyer tax credit well into 2010 and to expand it to include more than first time homebuyers. The important details:
- First time homebuyers can still receive up to an $8,000 tax credit, just as before.
- Anyone who hasn’t owned a home in the last 3 years is eligible to receive up to an $8,000 credit.
- Buyers who have owned their current home at least five years would be eligible for a tax credit of up to $6,500.
- To qualify for the credit, buyers in all groups must sign a purchase agreement by April 30, 2010 and close on their new home by June 30, 2010.

I hope they extend the tax credit at least until August 2010. I am a “soon-to-be” first time home buyer and have plans to purchase around late July. This tax credit has definitely enticed my purchasing decision and even more so now that there is talk about an extension. I’m from the west suburbs but have seen 1555 Wabash. If my husband and I ever move to Chicago, a home there would be near the top of my list. I’m gonna keep my fingers crossed and hope I can find a tax credit match like that out my way. That is really a great deal.
