Chicago’s Museum Campus — New Exhibits for Summer
Chicago’s Museum Campus is one of the best aspects about living in and around Chicago. Every season the museums change their exhibits and feature some of the most exciting events and popular culture going on in various areas of the world. The summer season has brought new exhibits to each of the museums.

The Field Museum
Real Pirates (February 25 through October 25, 2009) — Experience the classical age of piracy come to life at The Field Museum in the exhibition Real Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship. You’ll discover the perils and privileges of pirate life as you explore more than 200 artifacts recovered from the wreck of the Whydah — the first fully authenticated pirate ship ever to be discovered in U.S. waters.
The Ancient Americas (opening May 22) — The Field Museum’s ground-breaking new exhibition, The Ancient Americas takes you on a journey through 13,000 years of human ingenuity and achievement in the western hemisphere, where hundreds of diverse societies thrived long before the arrival of Europeans. In this 19,000-square-foot permanent exhibition you’ll live the epic story of the peopling of these continents, from the Arctic to the tip of South America. Discover how and why the early Americans developed farming, created new forms of artistic expression, and forged mighty empires.Chocolate — This is the Field Museum’s latest exhibit online. The Museum of Science and Industry
Harry Potter (April 30, 2009 - September 27, 2009) — This world-premiere exhibit is your chance to experience the craftsmanship of more than 200 authentic artifacts from the Harry Potter films, displayed in settings inspired by the film sets. Along the way, fans will get an up-close and personal look at some of their favorite props and costumes from the Harry Potter films. You will also be able to take a tour through Hagrid’s hut, enter a Quidditch area to toss a “Quaffle,” and may even encounter a few creatures like Buckbeak or a giant Acromantula spider along the way.
Fast Forward… Inventing the Future – Fast Forward is an immersive multimedia exploration of how our future lives are being shaped today. This exhibit spotlights some of today’s visionaries working toward a limitless, sustainable future.
From cuisine made by ink-jet printers, to urban high-rise farming, to instant-messaged hugs you can feel, you’ll meet pioneers working on these and other amazing ideas that could change the way we live. Inventors tell us in their own words how they’ve worked to take their ideas from “what if” toward “here’s how.”
Smart Home: Green + Wired (March 19, 2009 - January 03, 2010) — Take a guided tour of this real, three-story modular and sustainable “green” home in the Museum’s own backyard. You’ll view and hear about the latest innovations in reusable resources; smart energy consumption; clean, healthy-living environments and easy ways to go green.
The redesign includes a bold color scheme, new furniture, the addition of a “green” baby nursery, a space-maximizing hallway office, new cutting-edge technologies, wind power, earth-friendly and city-friendly landscaping ideas—and much more.
Shedd Aquarium
Oceanarium Redesigned — You will visit all your favorite animals – plus new ones, the Pacific Northwest coast has expanded and the Polar Play Zone, where little imaginations can run wild. More than ever, the Oceanarium immerses you in the vibrant coastal ecosystem of beluga whales, Pacific white-sided dolphins, sea otters and sea lions. You’ll also find a host of fishes and invertebrates that make their homes where freshwater flows into the ocean or where tides turn seascapes to landscapes and back again each day. Discover how animals are linked to each other, their homes and you.
Adler Planetarium
Telescopes: Through the Looking Glass Exhibit (Opens May 22) — In celebration of the 400th anniversary of the telescope, the Adler Planetarium will open a new exhibition, Telescopes: Through the Looking Glass, on May 22, 2009. Featuring some of the world’s most important telescopes and one-of-a-kind hands-on interactives, the exhibition will explore the extraordinary beauty and technology of these amazing instruments and the objects they enable us to discover.
