Chicago Makes The EPA’s Top 10 Greenest Cities in America List
Living in Chicago offers many fantastic benefits from a multitude of restaurants and shopping opportunities to a wide array of cultural and recreational activities. Now you can add the comfort of living in one of America’s greenest cities to that list.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency just released their list of the top U.S. metropolitan areas with the largest number of energy efficient buildings in 2008 that have earned EPA’s Energy Star rating. Chicago ranked sixth just behind Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Washington, D.C., and Dallas-Fort Worth.
You may not have realized that just like your home appliances and electronics, commercial buildings can earn the ENERGY STAR label as well. Buildings are evaluated by the EPA in areas such as energy use and amount of greenhouse gas emissions and then are ranked on a scale of 1-100. Buildings ranking in the top 25 percent are granted the ENERGY STAR LABEL.
According to the EPA, “Energy use in commercial buildings and manufacturing plants accounts for nearly half of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions and nearly half of energy consumption nationwide”.
With the commercial buildings in Chicago ranking so well on the EPA’s list, it just one more reason why now is a great time to be a resident of Chicago.
