Another Reason to Live in Chicago? It’s Fast Company’s U.S. City of the Year!
News from the hip tech, green and innovation magazine, Fast Company, is that Chicago has been named their U.S. City of the Year. Citizens of our great City already know the reasons — cultural attractions that could keep you busy very day of the year, a history that is known worldwide, an economy that’s growing faster than New York’s and L.A.’s, acclaimed (OK, we’re stretching) sports teams, a melting pot of music and art and even a frontrunner for the upcoming Summer Olympics in 2016.
It’s the birthplace of the modern skyscraper, home to a certain President-elect and has more nicknames than most modern rap singers.
When the world was finding that “green” was cool, Chicago was way ahead of the game. It’s City Hall features a rooftop garden with over 100 plant species and produces hundreds of pounds of honey each year. Chicago has more than 80 acres of green roofs, its 2,000 miles of alleys are being replaced with a permeable substance that will divert rainwater to Lake Michigan and the streets are home to a half million trees.
Chicago has its own style of hot dog (NEVER let ketchup touch one), it’s the home of musical greats (Same Cooke, Curtis Mayfield, Lou Rawls, B.B. King, Po Dog Pondering and Wilco). It has a renowned theater district, the Magnificent Mile with world-class shopping and is home to many top rated hotels, including The Peninsula, Four Seasons, The James and Ritz-Carlton.
Chicago. A world-class city to visit and certainly one with more than enough reasons to call it home.
